Thanks for the feedback! And I agree - the tone for the season is set very early on by the coaching staff - I would say the seeds are planted at tryouts and team selection time for Tier I and II teams and then refined/reinforced during the first few weeks of practices. The final reinforcement is to actually apply some of those rules that define the tone during games.

One other thing to add. I have always found and subscribed to the idea that practice effectiveness, tempo, and team work ethic is established in the first 2-4 weeks of the season. If you expect 100%+ in all of practices and demand that work ethic for the first 4 weeks, you tend to get it all year. If you decide in December that your team does not work hard in practice, good luck bringing the hammer down and getting then.

"Practice makes perminant." I like that. I hope you don't mind me stealing it.

Great article. People are more concerned than ever about what coach their kid has. Many people accuse these parents of thinking that their kid will be the next Sidney. Some probably do think (or dream) that, but I suspect most just want a coach that is going to coach the very best from their child during practice time. I don't see anything wrong with that. Not only does it create effective hockey players, but it creates effective people (adults) later in life.

It doesn't matter which side of the glass you watch from, it is very easy to spot the good coaches from the "not so effective but appreciated volunteers."
